Ind vs SA T20I: Klaasen lift South Africa to 6 wicket win, level series 1-1

South Africa vs India in Twenty20 International

Powered by a 30-ball 69 from unheralded Heinrich Klaasen and a match-winning unbeaten half-century from skipper JP Duminy, South Africa defeated India by six wickets in the second Twenty20 International to level the three-match series at 1-1 on Wednesday night.

Set a challenging target of 189, South Africa rode on local boy Klaasen's 69 off 30 deliveries and skipper Duminy's unbeaten 64 off 40 balls to chase down the score in 18.4 overs.

The Indian bowlers, especially leg-spinner spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, found it difficult to grip the bowl with constant drizzle pouring in for most part of the South African innings.

Steinhoff scandal wipes out $12 bn of shareholder value

South African magnate Christo Wiese, whose companies include Steinhoff and investment heavyweight Brait

Shocked Steinhoff shareholders have wiped more than $12 billion off its value since it revealed "accounting irregularities" and parted ways with its chief executive, in a dramatic fall from grace for the South African retailer.

Once a must-have for investors who backed its reinvention as a retail empire including brands such as Mattress Firm and Poundland under veteran CEO Markus Jooste, Steinhoff shares fell by 43 percent on Thursday, compounding the previous day's more than 60 percent fall.

This collapse leaves South African tycoon Christo Wiese, Steinhoff biggest shareholder and chairman, seriously out of pocket, eroding more about $2.8 billion of his net worth.

It also prompted an urgent call by South Africa's Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba for pension fund managers to report back on their exposures to the sudden sell-off, saying that the accounting issue was a "grave concern".

South Africa's Public Investment Corporation (PIC), the retailer's second-largest shareholder, said the allegations against Steinhoff were "serious concerns".

The PIC, which manages civil servants' pension funds, said in a statement it holds around 10 percent of Steinhoff's stock.

Coup in Zimbabwe: Mugabe and family under house arrest as army takes over

Source: Wikipedia photo

Zimbabwe's army said today it has President Robert Mugabe and his wife in custody and was securing government offices and patrolling the capital's streets following a night of unrest that included a military takeover of the state broadcaster.

The night's action triggered speculation of a coup, but the military's supporters praised it as a "bloodless correction." South Africa's president said he spoke with Mugabe, who was "fine" but confined to his home.

For the first time, this southern African nation is seeing the military oppose the 93-year-old Mugabe, the world's oldest head of state and one of the longest-serving authoritarian rulers.

Mugabe has been in power since Zimbabwe's independence from white minority rule in 1980.

The whiplash developments followed Mugabe's firing of his deputy, which had appeared to position the first lady, Grace Mugabe, to replace Emmerson Mnangagwa as one of the country's two vice presidents at a party conference next month.

But the first lady has proved unpopular among some Zimbabweans, and Mnangagwa had significant support from the military.

It was not clear today where Mnangagwa was, though he fled the country last week citing threats to him and his family.

Army seizes Zimbabwe state broadcaster, anti-Mugabe coup talk intensifies

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe

Soldiers are reported to have taken over the headquarters of Zimbabwe's national broadcaster ZBC, amid a growing political crisis.

Heavy gunfire and artillery have also been heard in northern suburbs, although the situation is unclear, BBC reported on Wednesday.

There has been no word so far from 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe.

Zimbabwe's ambassador in South Africa, Isaac Moyo, dismissed any talk of a coup and said the government was "intact".

The worsening situation came after Zimbabwe's ruling party accused the country's army chief of " treasonable conduct" after he warned of possible military intervention.

General Constantino Chiwenga had challenged President Mugabe after he sacked the vice-president.

Gen. Chiwenga said the army was prepared to act to end purges within Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.

Tensions were raised further on Tuesday when armoured vehicles were seen taking up positions on roads outside Harare, although their purpose was unclear.

Some staff at ZBC were manhandled when soldiers took over their offices in Harare late on Tuesday evening, according to informed sources.

Workers were told that they "should not worry", a source added, and that soldiers were only there to protect the site.
