Trump attacks AG, challenges him to probe Obama over Russia interference

President Donald Trump has attacked his own attorney general Jeff Sessions, challenging him to launch an investigation into the Obama administration for failing to do enough to stop the alleged Russian interference into the 2016 elections.

Trump in a tweet yesterday questioned why the Obama administration did not do more to counter Russian meddling in the presidential elections.

"Question: If all of the Russian meddling took place during the Obama Administration, right up to January 20th, why aren't they the subject of the investigation? Why didn't Obama do something about the meddling? Why aren't Dem crimes under investigation? Ask Jeff Sessions!" Trump tweeted.
It is the latest instance of the president publicly criticising federal law enforcement.

In recent months, Trump has become more critical of federal law enforcement and has called senior officials at the FBI biased against him.

Trump warms up to Sessions, says good to see AG taking action on leaks

US President Donald Trump had some warm words for Attorney General Jeff Sessions after weeks of publicly slamming him as weak.

"After many years of LEAKS going on in Washington, it is great to see the AG taking action! For National Security, the tougher the better!" Trump wrote on Twitter from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Sessions had been the public target of the president's anger recently because he had recused himself from a probe into allegations that Trump's aides coordinated with Russia to tilt last year's election in his favor.

At one point, Trump told The New York Times he would never have appointed Sessions had he known he would recuse himself. Trump also took to Twitter to blast Sessions as "VERY weak," among other criticisms on social media.

The attacks were widely seen as designed to force Sessions into resigning.

However, the former Alabama senator appeared to be on Trump's good side yesterday after launching a high-profile campaign to crack down on government employees who leak classified or sensitive information to the media.

The day also produced its share of what, sadly, has come to qualify as routine news: A Muslim organization in Sacramento, California, received a package in the mail that included a Koran in a tub of lard; police in Boise, Idaho, identified a teenage boy as the person likely responsible for scratching racist words on a car; in Lansing, Michigan, police launched a search for a suspect in the case of an assault against a Hispanic man. The victim had been found with a note indicating his attacker had been motivated by racial animus.

The specter of hate incidents and crimes — some of them fueled by the nastiness of the 2016 presidential campaign — felt white hot months ago. The issue remained high-profile as several horrific murders — a South Asian immigrant slain in Kansas City, a homeless black man butchered near Times Square in New York — generated outrage and national news coverage.
